COMPULSORY EDUCATION – COMPULSORY SCHOOLING

In Italy, school is public and free of charge.

Compulsory schooling lasts ten years, while compulsory education is until the age of 18. This means that adolescents need to attend either a school or professional training.

Compulsory schooling starts at the age of six. The first eight years’ curriculum (primary and lower middle school) is the same for everyone. After that, students can choose from three different types of upper secondary education: high schools (licei), technical institutes and professional training institutes (apprenticeship).

In Bressanone there are:

  • German-language kindergartens and schools
  • Italian-language kindergartens and schools

Italian is taught as a second language in German-language schools, while German is taught as a second language in Italian-language schools. In both schools, English is taught as foreign language.

Parents can choose to enrol their children in either German or Italian-language schools, and they are recommended to seek advice before making their decision.

Besides state-funded schools, there are also some state-recognised private schools in South Tyrol.
