COSTS OF BASIC MEDICAL CARE

In Italy, all resident citizens are automatically covered by health insurance (national health service).

The patient shares part of the costs for each single medical service received.

This share is called a “ticket” (co-payment fee).

The health ticket applies for:

  • Outpatient specialist care (instrumental and laboratory diagnostics, including thermal therapies)
  • Emergency services
  • Medicaments

The health ticket amount depends on the service provided and is determined by the law.

The ticket is usually paid for directly at the designated counter in the hospital.
